"Thriving throughout the Underground fields over the last two decades, the demonic entity humanly known as Inferno Requiem epitomized its blaze of Black Metal mysticism with last year's third full-length creation, "Shanhai".
Gathering and sharpening elements from its previous works, the Taiwanese one-man project reached its grand achievement, an ambitious and awe-inspiring piece of malignant compositions and atmospheric vastness. Stirring from a fountain of ancient wizardry, Inferno Requiem lavishes with a wrathful menacing sound which drinks from the cauldron of Black Metal might from the 1990s, yet parallelly injects a particular, original and decidedly unconventional quality.
Indulging in epic hidden tales of ancient mythology, "Shanhai" carries the majestic essence displayed in its concept, with vast keyboard landscapes and melodic piercing riffing, complemented by the abrasive belligerent vocals and coldness in sonic production, the harsh and the atmospheric essences permeated throughout the group's past, here in joint complicity, refined and overtly enhanced.
Variation and a sense of dynamics pervade thru the almost 40 minutes of "Shanhai", altering from hostile blast-beating clashes to mid-tempo moody passages, where darkness and light converge to evoke an ambitious and utterly engaging sonic pallet"
